Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that’s our company’s purpose – and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.
The role
Agile Six is looking for Engineers for anticipated roles on our cross-functional agile teams. Our partners include: the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and others. Generally, our team looks for someone interested in and capable of working across the tech stack, and in using both front and back end languages and frameworks. Our ideal candidate is patient, curious, proactive, and positive; someone who understands the large impact that even small changes can have on end users, someone able to learn a complex landscape and innovate, someone who constantly seizes opportunities to refine, and someone who is dedicated to accessibility and championing the impact of our work. Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a passion for working on important problems that have a lasting impact on millions of users and make a difference in our government.
Optional language:
Please note that this is a Key Personnel role, as stipulated by our contract, considered "essential to work performance". The resumes of Key Personnel are subject to government review and approval, and any changes to Key Personnel (such as voluntary or involuntary separation) may require government oversight.
Responsibilities
- This role centers on crafting components and service APIs, using specific frameworks and architectures to thoughtfully integrate features. This is a hands-on coding role.
- In this role, you’ll work with the team to solve technical challenges, design practical solutions, troubleshoot production issues, and enhance system performance. You’ll start applying design patterns to support quality-focused decisions and help maintain standards through code reviews, testing strategies, tools, and metrics.
- You’ll actively develop skills in making thoughtful architectural choices, applying design patterns and best practices to uphold quality. Exposure to erse systems and development tasks will guide your decisions on architecture and scalability, while you expand your skills with additional languages and frameworks, enhancing team flexibility and supporting smoother workflows.
- We value teamwork and mentorship. You’ll participate in code reviews and pair programming with colleagues, strengthening both your skills and code quality. You’ll also develop strong communication skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams, creating a collaborative environment.
- This role encourages you to embrace innovative ideas and support others in exploring new approaches. By sharing insights and connecting team members to broader goals, you’ll help tackle challenges holistically, contribute to impactful improvements, and make informed trade-offs.
- We expect the responsibilities of this position to shift and grow organically over time, in response to considerations such as the unique strengths and interests of the selected candidate and other team members and an evolving understanding of the delivery environment.
- Support the practice of engineering within the organization as needed, through activities such as help with recruitment and hiring, code challenges, and participating in our community of practice.
Basic qualifications
- Bias to action; you’ve proactively tried new things of your own volition
- Pragmatic decision-making skills and the ability to weigh and navigate tradeoffs
- A strong sense of experimentation, eager to innovate, using hypothesis-driven development
- With 2years of experience as a Software Engineer, you have gained hands-on experience with software architecture across different projects and are building expertise in specific technical areas. You have production experience with your primary language and automated testing tools for it. You’re growing in your ability to support design and implementation decisions over time.
- You’re exploring ways to leverage AI and emerging technologies to improve efficiency and quality in your work. Your understanding of design patterns and development principles helps you contribute effectively within the software stack, working across multiple languages and frameworks.
- You’re adaptable in Agile environments, focused on team goals and developing an Agile approach in your day-to-day tasks.
- You have lived and worked in the United States for 3 out of the last 5 years
- Some of our clients may request or require travel from time to time. If this is a concern for you, we encourage you to apply and discuss it with us at your initial interview
Additional desired qualifications
- Experience developing in AWS or Azure cloud environments
- Experience with continuous integration/deployment systems, Jenkins or Github Actions
- Familiarity with the US Web Design System
- Experience working with government agencies
