Researchers are rarely involved in policy efforts because they lack training and opportunities for engaging with the right policymakers at the right time when their subject matter experience could be useful to policy development. The Research-to-Policy Collaboration (research2policy.org/rpc-model) revolutionizes how legislators interact with the research community by providing an agenda-neutral resource for connecting legislative officials with those who specialize in data and scientific study relevant to policymakers’ current policy agendas. This also provides a resource for researchers navigating policy engagement opportunities. Our team sits at the intersection of research and policy by both organizing researchers’ policy engagement, as well as evaluating our impact and strategies for improving researchers’ experience. Our rigorous study has demonstrated that supporting researcher-policymaker interactions can both improve the value and use of research evidence in policy as well as provide a benefit to researchers’ policy skill, engagement, and future research.

The Evidence-to-Impact Collaborative at The Pennsylvania State University is hiring a Policy Associate who would be trained in this innovative, nonpartisan research translation model, in addition to supporting other methods for improving the use of research in legislative activities and strategies to bridge the research and policy communities. This position provides an opportunity to learn translational skills while working with a legislative audience at the federal and state levels. The Policy Associate would be supported by a team that does the “legwork” of connecting policymaking staff with researchers, coordinating researchers’ rapid responses, and providing technical assistance to both parties. Job Responsibilities

There’s a great problem in the West. 

For all the news we read, almost nobody pays attention to what foreign leaders actually say. Other than in extremely filtered form (through traditional media) – which often isn’t faithful to the sentiment of what’s being said – we don’t hear from them.

Contrast this with the 1960s, and JFK’s Ambassador to Japan, Edwin Reischauer, making important cultural documentaries to help Americans better understand Japan, and the Japanese way of perceiving the world. Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone went on to say: “I know of no other man who has so thoroughly understood Japan.” Such diplomatic attempts at empathy have deteriorated sharply ever since. I’m looking to make a humble attempt at reviving the Reischauerian spirit.

At large, we in the West are not listening to other parts of the world. Cooling relations between countries – which stems from a lack of listening to one another – is becoming a serious global problem. Without global cooperation, all other things we in the West might worry about – climate targets, AI safety, global preparedness for the next pandemic… – are not adequately going to get resolved. Sustainable development cannot work in the context of a world at war.

Looking back to the early 1990s, and the hand the West had then, there is no reason why young people today should be being bequeathed a world descending into instability and monetary woes. This is the product of bad management, and in international relations: a severe atrophying in diplomatic ability (that did exist in the 60s, 70s and 80s). The post-Cold War generation has largely failed us. (I am 30 years old. I am allowed to say this.)

We need a new Council on Foreign Relations (the backers of Foreign Affairs magazine). A “Council on Foreign Relations – for a multipolar world”, if you will.

This to be a media organisation that sincerely attempts to understand foreign leaders, and peace-make. We will not be content with mere publication of papers, but strive to craft viable solutions; and fact-check and hold to account influential traditional media where we consider it is misrepresenting, or being blind to, the reality of facts on the ground. We will aim to provide such value to government decision-makers that instead of us having to lobby for our ideas, they will be actively solicited.

Our focus area will be live conflicts, and very bubbly/simmering global points of tension. We will not look at trade wars or low-level tariff disputes. But rather: stopping active hot war.

We believe opposing sides being frank and actually listening to one other, and in being encouraged even to acknowledge where they might be wrong, occasionally there is a creative middle ground. Our founding motto: “Help policymakers be less foolish.”

If this message at all speaks to you, and you are potentially interested in supporting such an endeavour, what we need: a highly trusted finance/tax/legal person. A Gwynne Shotwell-like character (COO of SpaceX), who manages the brass tacks of the company – allowing Elon, and the rest of his team, to focus on rocket-making.

Early questions: should what we’re doing be incorporated as a charity of business? What type? And incorporated where? (I’m presently London-based, but most investors/donors will likely be US-based.) Do we have to publicly disclose who our donors are? What are the rules around this? And what are salary rules/laws for such institutions? How do we present our internal workings, with due transparency, such that all who contribute are satisfied for the long-term?

We need someone who can be part-Treasurer: 

• Set up our bank accounts; 
• Liaise with donors/investors and make a straightforward and simple process for them to contribute; 
• Contractually manage writers and staff (my research assistant is in South Africa, and we’ll be hiring contributors from the world over).

And part Legal Counsel. When I personally read something like: “[Y company] is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, meaning your donations are tax deductible. Anyone giving $250 or more will receive a letter for the IRS documenting their donation…” My brain does not engage. I feel like a lobotomy patient. Ditto anything to do with “matching programs with employers”. It’s not hyperbole to say I would rather root canal than read most legal documents. I need someone to help manage this. The role could otherwise be entitled “VP of everything the founder sucks at” – so an extremely important role; freeing me to focus on editorial and product.

The one thing I am extremely good and meticulous at in this realm is regular cashflow forecasting. I can proudly say that I co-founded a bootstrapped publishing company (https://courseconcierge.com/) aged 24, in 2017, with a few thousand dollars to rub together, and even in the very capital-intensive world of video production, we managed never to run out of money. The company continues today, seven years on (I am still part-owner, but not day-to-day involved), and has always been very profitable. I know how to make a small amount of money go a long way.

Why you should want to work with me:

i) I worked in the Prime Minister’s office in the UK (10 Downing Street), with the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, 2020–21. I have plausibly spent more time sat around the Cabinet Room table – observing decision makers – than anyone alive my age or younger. I’ve seen what kinds of briefs (central to what this new institution will be about) are helpful to decision-makers, and which are not.

ii) In October 2023, I published a revisionist account of what actually happened between Ukraine and Russia in attempted March/April 2022 peace talks. Professor John Mearsheimer has said of it: “This video is excellent. I actually learned a lot.” And _The Spectator_’s Russia correspondent noted: “Your video is far better sourced and footnoted than more or less anything I have seen on the subject or indeed on Ukraine in general – a very thorough piece of work.”

iii) A great number of prestige media institutions today were founded roughly 100 years ago, by people in their mid-twenties and early thirties, who were far from world-leading authorities in what they were publishing on. I’ve read a huge number of biographies of such founders. Some favourites: Henry Luce & Time magazine; Bennett Cerf & Random House; Harold Ross & The New Yorker; and slightly more recent, David Ogilvy & Ogilvy & Mather. (I likely read more history than anyone you know.)

iv) I recognise there’s a worldview beyond America, and I would like to help better champion this perspective in the West. I have an immense affinity for America, and I’ve spent a great deal of time there. Now two companies I’ve co-founded are US-based, and thus, whilst I do not reside there, I have the joy of paying US federal taxes. But not having grown up in the States, I consider I have a more expansive aperture to my worldview than comes naturally to most people born there.

About the role:

You can be anywhere in the world to do this role. We will grow as a remote company. And you’ll have ongoing flexibility in both when and where you work. I’m seeking someone who can start part-time, as soon as possible, and who can grow into a full-time role come March/April 2024. Compensation: we can discuss.

About the role

We are looking for an experience crypto sales/ partnerships profession to design, build, and manage a best-in-class Business Development organization that drives adoption of Omni’s product offerings. 

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute go-to-market (GTM) strategies (both outbound and inbound). Stay on top of market trends and competitive activity to identify the most promising campaigns
• Craft and implement sales plans, aligning with our ambitious growth objectives. Be ultimately responsible for meeting our business development OKRs
• Set up best-in-class processes and tools for managing clients relations across full customer lifecycle (reach, acquisition, conversion, retention, loyalty). Supervise effective funnel feeding and execution, constantly improving and adjusting processes to evolving GTM strategies
• Hire, Lead and Mentor the BD Team to efficiently handle all customer relations, while executing on the largest leads yourself
• Work cross functionally with product, marketing and customer success to ensure a smooth onboarding process for new customers, professional partnership marketing, and a tight product feedback loop while identifying upsell & cross-sell opportunities

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience working in partnerships, sales, business development, or similar roles at a high-growth technology company with at least two years of deep crypto experience (preferably in a B2B protocol selling solutions for developers)
• 1+ year of experience in building, managing, and mentoring high-performing sales/ partnership teams - needs to be an effective sales person themself, but even more importantly know how to scale BD through the team (note for interviewer: ask for inidual track record and how it performed to the track record of the team)
• Can thoroughly explain how ethereum, rollups, core DeFi protocols and interoperability protocols function
• Strong track record of developing and closing tier 1 sales/ partnership deals (note for interviewer: ask for particular protocol names)
• A deep and relevant network including industry leaders and executives
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of building strong relationships with partners and clients

We’re looking for a versatile and experienced audio engineer to work across our shows, including Today, Explained, The Gray Area, The Weeds, and Unexplainable. You will work with our production teams to mix daily and weekly episodes, oversee recording sessions, edit and clean up tape, and score and sound design segments. You’ll also engineer additional Vox audio shows as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Creatively collaborate with production staff on mixing, sound design, music selection, and audio clean-up across all of our shows.

• Experience with remote production workflows involving multiple collaborators and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience with microphones, eq, compression, and producing content to meet loudness standards.
• Demonstrated experience with Pro Tools, Izotope RX, Riverside or other remote AoIP production platforms, and other common audio production tools.
• Ability to make decisions and work efficiently under deadline and prioritize work when facing multiple deadlines.

This role is part of the DHIS2 Training & Communications team. Our work includes a large variety of digital and print media types, such as website content, newsletters and other email campaigns, informational articles and in-depth country stories, news bulletins and press releases, social media content, scripted and interview-based video content, photographs and digital image assets, presentations and talking points, internal and external reports, posters, conference peripherals, etc. It also involves a variety of outreach activities and events, both in-person and online, including conferences, training courses, webinars, meetings, online community engagement, and more.

While writing is an essential part of the role, we’re envisioning this as an all-around communications position that will have the opportunity to contribute to all stages of our work. You’ll work with the communications team to develop new — and iterate on existing — communications products and campaigns. You’ll engage in independent background research and meet with subject matter experts to identify topics of interest and develop articles and resources that help convey innovations and DHIS2 impact. Beyond the core team, this role can also potentially include a capacity-building component to strengthen communication skills within our network of HISP groups in the global south. Depending on your background and interest, you may also be able to contribute to shaping our profile for a growing number of brands within HISP and DHIS2, and contribute to planning and execution of targeted campaigns for key audiences.

This is a new position in the DHIS2 Training & Communications team. We are looking for motivated and experienced candidates who will work with us to shape this role and help us improve our communication impact across platforms, channels, and media types.

What you’ll do:

• Work with the Communications Lead, DHIS2 core team and HISP groups, and other stakeholders to identify topics of interest, gaps in communication, areas for improvement, and new opportunities
• Collaborate with the communications team on the development and design of new communications products and strategies
• Plan, prepare, review, revise and maintain communications material for a variety of channels and formats, including but not limited to:
  • DHIS2 and HISP websites
  • newsletters and email campaigns

• Research and analyze real-world DHIS2 projects, tools, applications and integrations, and draft stories that describe them and their relevance/impact for different audiences

• Provide ad hoc communications support to teams within the larger DHIS2 project

Qualifications

• At least three years of professional writing experience, preferably in fields related to the HISP Centre’s work (digital health, global health, digital public goods, etc.)
• Significant communications experience, ideally with a variety of media types
• Excellent research, writing, communication, editing and organizational skills
• Experience with digital publishing tools and platforms
• Experience collaborating with technical subject matter experts on writing projects
• Experience producing rich media content, including social media, video and educational materials is a plus
• Experience with targeted communication to high-level stakeholders (leadership at donor and partner organizations, government officials, etc.), particularly in a field related to our work, is a plus
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required; fluency in other priority languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic) is a plus
• Ability and willingness to travel internationally as needed

Remote Work and Travel

We are a remote-first global team but we recognize the importance of meeting and collaborating with colleagues in person. Contract details

This is a full-time position (80% possible) on an annual renewable contract. We are focused on building long-term contractor relationships. We support flexible work arrangements with generous holiday allowances, and we offer the option to renew for longer contract periods over time.
