About the Field Data team

As we scale to reach millions of people experiencing extreme poverty, we believe that data can transform cash delivery by:

To realize this vision, we are building a best-in-class data team focused on cash delivery: operations, payments, and recipient safeguarding.

You will be the Field Data team’s first Data Scientist, reporting to the Senior Data Manager and working closely with the Senior Data Architect. This is an opportunity to join at the inception of the team and guide foundational decisions regarding vision, priorities, and best practices. We are a small (but growing) group with a startup mentality, applying engineering best practices and a product development approach to data.

Our data infrastructure is built on AWS and Databricks, with dashboards and visualizations in Tableau. We primarily use SQL, Python, and R.

About this role

You will deliver insights and decision making tools that help shape cash delivery by determining which projects we take on, how we design them, and how we implement them.

Responsibilities include:

• Statistical analysis and predictive modeling. Own process end-to-end: implement statistical methods and build, train, and deploy predictive models to solve problems in cash delivery utilizing code (e.g., Python, R). Current priorities:
  • Targeting. Implement and improve existing machine learning algorithms predicting poverty level from call-detail records (CDR) and geospatial data. This work enables us to remotely identify eligible recipients at scale, and has been highlighted in WIRED with findings published by our research partners in Nature.
  • Risk prediction. Develop new risk prediction models that help us design programs and target recipient outreach to keep recipients and communities safe.
• Support data quality assurance. Work with the Senior Data Architect to design processes that ensure key metrics, models, and analysis are built on high quality data.
• Communication. Collaborate with leaders throughout the organization to define data product requirements, educate them about solutions, and make recommendations.

This role has a high degree of autonomy and the ability to shape our process from the ground up by determining best practices and informing the data product roadmap.

About you

You are a mid-level to Senior Data Scientist with the following qualifications.

Required qualifications:

• 5+ years experience working with data querying languages (e.g., SQL) and statistical modeling software (e.g., Python, R)
• 5+ years experience as a Data Scientist or related position applying statistical and/or machine learning (ML) techniques, with a deep understanding of the key parameters that affect their performance
• Deep understanding of ML algorithms – ability to apply the appropriate methods, as well as benchmark and diagnose predictions to rapidly improve performance
• Proficient in spark, dask, and/or other packages for distributed computing
• Ability to travel and deploy to international, on premise locations for up to 1 month at a time

Preferred but not required qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM or other quantitative field

Helpful qualifications (we do not expect you to have all of these):

• Advanced degree in a STEM or other quantitative field
• Experience analyzing call-detail records, geospatial (e.g., ArcGIS or Python geospatial stack), and/or social network data
• Experience developing an end-to-end machine learning pipeline with a scalable ML framework (TensorFlow, Torch, H2O, Spark MLib, scikit-learn)

Level and Compensation

At GiveDirectly, we strive to pay our employees generously and equitably. We use an accredited third party salary aggregator to ensure that staff’s total compensation package (base compensation + bonus) falls within the 75th percentile of similar roles, at similar organizations. We also have a no negotiation policy to ensure we are paying staff equitably across roles.

Data Scientist:

• The United States base salary for this role is $130,000 with a 10% bonus index.
• The Kenya base salary for this role is $72,000 with a 10% bonus index.
• For non-US and non-Kenya candidates, the salary for this role will be adjusted based on cost of living and the local labor market. A benchmark for your location will be shared during the interview process.

For exceptionally experienced candidates we are open to considering a Senior Data Scientist role for this posting. Both positions will start as independent contributors with the potential to manage if the team grows.

About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join an internal audit team in the build phase and add real value to a growing business. Senior Site Reliability Engineer

The role:

The Senior Site Reliability Engineer will be responsible for creation, maintenance, and ongoing monitoring of key parts of Newsela’s infrastructure stack. You will be writing code primarily in Terraform and Python to build out a sustainable and reliable platform for our suite of applications and services. About This Position

We are looking for someone to serve as our database coordinator, working with various c-suite executives to gather, organize, and share information needed by our various programs. This position will initially only be responsible for designing, maintaining, and overseeing the internal database but with the potential to grow into overseeing a public facing database.

How You Will Make a Difference

In this role, you will oversee the collection and maintenance of information in our databases which will help us better serve our audiences and brand clients.

Data Collection and Maintenance

• Design, maintain, and oversee the systems and processes for the collection of information about our audiences including, but not limited to, material companies, investors, incubators/accelerators, scientists, and brands with a strong preference for an automated system using off-shelf technology.
• Work with the programmatic subject matter experts to determine what information we want to collect from each audience and set up periodic check-ins to ensure the information collected is useful and tweak the system as necessary.
• Serve as the first point of contact at MII with new material companies and potentially other audiences to gather information needed for the database including through surveys, emails, and phone calls.
• Take notes in team meetings discussing updates to these audiences and ensure the database is updated with information from these team discussions.
• Review news, company newsletters, and internal MII communications including Slack and add new relevant information to the database.
• Update and maintain the data collected from online forms shared on MII’s website.

Data Sharing

• Serve as the internal point of contact for all MII staff related to questions about the information in the database.
• Add new relevant information into the monthly brand engagement newsletter. Relevancy to be discussed with the Chief Partnership Officer.

Title: Staff Software Security Engineer

Location: Austin, TX or Remote, US

We are hiring a Staff Software Security Engineer to help us build out security solutions across our detection & response engineering, identity, security architecture, and application & cloud security. You are as much a builder as you are a leader. You can build on your previous experiences as being a domain expert and help craft a technical strategy that fits the needs of the business. You love mentoring and sharing your knowledge from other engineers and team mates just as much as you enjoy learning from them.

What you’ll be doing:

• Collaborate: Technical leadership with a small team of 3-4 software security engineers to create well-designed, fit-for purposes, maintainable solutions. You will bring a spirit of collaboration and willingness to work with multiple departments and stakeholders. You should have the mindset that security is a continuous and collaborative process and want to simplify security (paved roads) for your customers
• Build: We are a team of builders and seek a balance between build vs buy, cost, and operational efficiency. You may be building out customer security tools, doing response automation, or helping engineering teams to build custom security solutions. You bring an eagerness to find fit-for-purpose solutions, build, deploy and operate
• Security Data: Lots of data. Whether it’s in detection & response, engineering, DevSecOps, vulnerability management, or incident response, we are a highly evidence-driven culture that leverages data to help us fill in the gaps of our understanding. You will also contribute detection rules to our SIEM as well as set strategy for automating our detection & response pipelines
  Application Security – You will help secure the software development lifecycle. We provide a broad range of services to support our IT & engineering teams from secure design & architecture reviews, vulnerability management, Bug Bounty program management, 3rd party pen testing, dependency management, patching, and SAST scanning. You reach for Burp proxy like it’s second nature to inspect for potential vulnerabilities or to reproduce a bug bounty report
• Application Security: You will work with leaders in Privacy & Trust, Software Engineering, Product, & Corporate Security to understand the business and build technical strategy and roadmaps that align with the business and operational strategy

Experience and Education Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent experience
• You must have hands-on coding experience building, deploying and operating solutions. This is a hands-on role building security solutions
• Demonstrated technical leadership with ability to communicate to Junior/Senior engineers and fluidly as with the rest of the business. Ability to build solutions is an important ability to communicate and influence.
• Depth in experience in one or more domains of Application Security, Cloud Security, or Detection & Response Engineering. While you may be working in multiple domains, we’re not expecting out-of-the-box unicorns here
• Minimum of 7 years technical professional experience in a security or software engineering discipline as a development engineer
• 3+ years experience building customer applications, tools, and/or data pipelines
• 3+ years of experience in cloud security, architecture, and secure coding practices
• 3+ years working in a cloud environment (AWS, GCP)
• 3+ years working with container orchestration services (k8’s, Docker, service mesh)
• Demonstrated experience within the security community on open source projects, bug bounty submissions, or similar contributions.
• Deep knowledge of both loosely and strongly typed languages
• Ability to work with engineering focused teams to promote safe development practices
• Experience with CI/CD tools such as CircleCI, Jenkins, Github webhooks
• Demonstrated experience in at least one programming language such as Python, Go, JavaScript, or Rust
• Experience with the OWASP Top 10 and common application exploits, and techniques
• Experience with vulnerability management and scoring techniques like CVSS, EPSS
• Experience with RBAC and IAM access control techniques
• Exposure to security and compliance, and privacy frameworks such as GDPR, CCPA, ISO27001, NIST CSF
