With limited supervision from Software Engineering leadership, the Senior Software Engineer is responsible for building and implementing creative and effective software solutions for our customers. Senior Software Engineers research, analyze, design, build, test, maintain and improve critical applications and functionality for our core platforms. Senior Software Engineers also play an important technical leadership and mentorship role within the Software Engineering organization.
What you’ll be doing
- Design, develop and deliver high-quality software solutions at a specialist level within one or more business domains applying the required specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities discussed below.
- Analyze and select appropriate technology that meets user needs while being scalable, efficient, and secure and following company and industry standard processes. Evaluate solutions and vendors and make recommendations as necessary.
- Write and implement efficient code that meets stated business requirements while adhering to company, compliance, and security standards.
- Mentor Software Engineers through design reviews, code reviews, coaching, and training opportunities.
- Serve as a lead technical contributor to the efforts of development teams, including complex project work that involves multiple internal and external team members.
- Understand and apply agile best practices, with a “shift-left” testing approach, including implementing automated testing and various testing solutions for unit, functional, load and integration testing early and throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Troubleshoot, debug and provide root cause for the most complex incidents and experiences, helping the team learn from and avoid similar issues in the future
- Determine and lead process improvements.
- Deliver solutions in a collaborative, agile environment with others, including Product Owners, Business Analysts, UX designers, Scrum Masters, leadership and architects.
- Maintain and grow technical skills, knowledge and currency via online, printed or in person trainings and seminars.
- Collaborate, contribute to and mentor peers via formal and informal channels such as Guilds and peer group organizations.
What you will need to be successful
- 8+ years’ experience in software development with broad experiencing designing, programming and implementing large information systems, and with specific experience in the Microsoft technology stack.
- Demonstrated expertise developing enterprise-scale applications using Microsoft Azure technologies such as Azure App Service, Azure API Management, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Service Bus, Azure Application Insights, Azure Application Gateway, Azure Cache for Redis, Azure Event Grid, Azure Key Vault, and Azure SQL
- Expert-level knowledge of secure software development practices
- Experience with Azure DevOps Services for automated lifecycle management and Git source code version control system
- Experience with code productivity, diagnostic, quality, and testing tools (ReSharper, Code Rush, NCrunch, Splunk, Dynatrace)
- Deep skills using Microsoft software products including .NET, .NET Core, C#, and Microsoft SQL Server

You'll be the primary security architect for Core DevOps, developing deep expertise in pipeline security, source code management, and DevOps toolchain risks. You'll maintain tight alignment with Core DevOps tech leads to understand their roadmap, identify emerging security needs early, and coordinate comprehensive security coverage across our Application Security team. This is a high-visibility role with significant influence across one of GitLab's most critical product areas.
What you’ll do
- Serve as the dedicated security architect and strategic partner for Core DevOps functional leadership, developing deep understanding of their priorities, challenges, and roadmap
- Lead security architecture and design work for strategic Core DevOps initiatives, providing clear direction and proactive guidance to cross-functional teams
- Identify, assess, and drive reduction of systemic security risks in the Product Security Risk Register related to CI/CD pipelines, source code management, and DevOps workflows

Security Architects are a part of our Security Platforms and Architecture team, who address complex security challenges facing GitLab and its customers to enable GitLab to be the most secure software factory platform on the market. Composed of Security Architecture, Security Research, and Application Security, we focus on systemic product security risks and work cross-functionally to mitigate them while maintaining Engineering’s development velocity.

Essential Functions
- Serves as an Eligibility Tester

What you'll bring

Purpose of the role
Lead cloud release execution, production readiness, and incident coordination across the Nx Cloud platform. This role ensures that every release is executed safely, monitored effectively, and communicated clearly across internal and customer-facing teams. Be the operational bridge between Release Engineering, SRE, Support, and Product Engineering, ensuring that cloud deployments are reliable, transparent, and continuously improving.
What you’ll be doing:
- Release Management
Own and coordinate end-to-end cloud release cycles, from release readiness and change approvals to deployment and verification.
Facilitate release sign-off, ensuring quality, stability, and risk mitigation before going live.
Partner with engineering and QA to validate build quality and rollback procedures.
Maintain a central release calendar, checklists, and change logs.
Drive change management governance and ensure compliance with release standards.
- Monitoring & Incident Management
Collaborate with the SRE team to enhance production monitoring, alerting, and observability for critical services.
Lead incident coordination and communication, ensuring timely resolution and clear updates to stakeholders.
Oversee post-incident reviews and RCA documentation, tracking remediation progress.Proactively identify recurring issues and drive preventive improvements.
- Operational Readiness & Risk Management
Ensure environments (test, staging, production) are release-ready and well-maintained.
Support environment stability by coordinating with SRE and QA for timely updates and access management.
Lead risk assessment for releases, including rollback and contingency plans.
Partner with support and customer success teams to ensure customer impact visibility and communication.
- Tooling & Process Improvement
Collaborate with Release Engineering and SRE on Argo-based deployment tools and CI/CD improvements.
Identify automation opportunities to streamline release and monitoring workflows.
Contribute to documentation, playbooks, and training for new release procedures.
- Cross-Team Communication
Provide real-time release status updates to leadership, engineering, and support teams.
Ensure consistent post-release summaries and stakeholder reporting.
Act as the primary communication bridge between engineering, SRE, and customer-facing teams during releases and incidents.
What we’re looking for:
- Experience
10+ years in Release Management, SRE, or DevOps operations roles (give examples of roles) for cloud platforms
Proven experience managing production releases and incident response in a SaaS or distributed environment.
Hands-on experience operating hybrid infrastructures, combining cloud-based Kubernetes (EKS) with on-premise services (e.g., relays and mediators) deployed using Ansible and Docker Compose on providers such as Datapacket.
Hands-on experience with AWS Athena (to analyze ALB logs).
- Technical skills
Kubernetes, GitOps, ArgoCD, Jenkins, Terraform, or similar CI/CD tooling.
Ansible and Docker Compose
Proficiency with Jira
- Knowledge
Strong understanding of AWS (EKS/ECS, IAM, CloudWatch, Lambda, S3, EC2); familiarity with GCP/Azure
Strong understanding of Kubernetes (EKS) and service mesh deployment, operation, and lifecycle management, including zero-downtime upgrades and version rollouts (e.g., Istio, Gloo, Ambassador, or Traefik).
Knowledge of monitoring and alerting systems (Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, NetData, OpsGenie).

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
